Women in Polar Science (WiPS) is an international network of women in polar science which formed in April 2014, through use of social media. It grew from a discussion of several women working in Polar Science who felt there was a need to create a network to celebrate and showcase the significant and inspiring work of women in Polar Science. It was felt there was a need to build and strengthen connections, and provide an avenue for mentoring women in polar science at various stages of their careers.
We want to build a strong, global network of female polar scientists of various ages and across various disciplines. This network is intended to support women in meeting some of the specific challenges of working in Arctic and Antarctic science. We feel that WiPS can encourage women to follow careers in this field. We also hope that it will enable us to recognise and celebrate women and men who have worked to support female representation and contribution in the polar science field, and to help in targeting support for minority groups in the polar science community. We welcome input from Polar Scientists from all around the world at all stages of their career.
