Elaine dos Santos, PhD
Ambassador, Instituto Gelo na Bagagem (Brazil)
Elaine is elated in Admiralty Bay, on the Antarctic Peninsula, during one of her expeditions as part of the Brazilian Antarctic Program.
What’s the work that you do?
I am a geoscientist working with atmospheric aerosols, contributing to the understanding of climate processes, including in polar regions. I have participated in eight expeditions to Antarctica through the Brazilian Antarctic Program.
Currently, I work as a speaker and science communicator. I am especially dedicated to motivating and inspiring Brazilian children to pursue their studies.
I am also the author of Will, the Petrel, a children’s book that explores climate change and the concept of “flying rivers” through the perspective of an Antarctic seabird, making complex environmental processes engaging and accessible to young audiences.
What keeps you going?
Being in Antarctica has been one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. Contributing to science through meaningful research makes it even more powerful, but what truly drives me is going beyond academia. Writing for children and sharing the importance of Antarctica with new generations gives purpose to my work.
My greatest motivation is to transform this unique experience into a lasting legacy — both for science and for children — through education, storytelling, and my book Will, the Petrel. I want to inspire curiosity, awareness, and a deeper connection with our planet
What’s your message to the world?
Antarctica may seem distant, but it is deeply connected to all of us. What happens there shapes our climate, our oceans, and our future. Science only transforms the world when it reaches people.
Education changed my life and reshaped my story. That is why I believe every child deserves access to learning and opportunity.
By bringing Antarctica closer to people — especially children — we can inspire awareness, responsibility, and hope for a better future
