Pamela, in red polar gear, takes a selfie with two other women further along down a rocky, lightly snow-dusted path. There is a building structure visible in the background.

What’s the work that you do?

I have been working on Antarctic seaweeds, evaluating the impact of climate change, ocean acidification and warming, on the mechanisms of carbon acquisition, focusing on evaluating how future impacts on Antarctic waters might affect seaweed’s physiological and ecological responses, depending on its habitat.

What keeps you going?

Antarctica is still a pristine environment very rich in biodiversity with very particular species that have been adapted to this extreme environment for many years. Climate change could profoundly impact this ecosystem, so our research can help to elucidate its impact, and in some ways, diminish their negative impacts by contributing with our knowledge.

What’s your message to the world?

Science matters, we need to pass on our knowledge, passion, and interest in nature to future generations, there is only one Planet Earth!
