Sari Matilainen, MSc
Finnish Antarctic Research Program
What’s the work that you do?
I work for the Finnish Antarctic Research Program as a senior coordinator. With a small team I plan and organize summer research expeditions to the Finnish Antarctic Research Station Aboa in Queen Maud’s Land. In Finland, I do everything from attending international meetings to communicating and training our scientists, to buying food and other supplies for our station in Antarctica. In Antarctica, I do everything from fixing things to helping out scientists and cooking meals. I went to Antarctica in 2014 for the first time, then had a break of several years when I had two kids (now 8 and 9 years) who I am currently raising as a single mother. I got back on the roster for the 2024 season and I am due to travel South shortly again for the 2025 season. So I live a very full life and sometimes many things are a struggle, such as worrying if my kids are ok when I am down south and remembering to call my kids everynight from Antarctica to say good night. But it is all worth it, and the children see a mother living a full life.
What keeps you going?
Everyday in my job is an adventure and I love the daily problem solving that I need to undertake. I also love the community spirit and pristine nature in Antactica.
What’s your message to the world?
Women’s Antarctic careers matter! I dream of a world where raising your children and at the same time continuing an Antarctic career is more easily achieved. Little by little the world is changing.
