Kimberly Galvez, PhD

Viking Expeditions

Kim is in Yankee Harbour, Antarctica. Visible in the background are penguins.

What’s the work that you do?

I’m Chief Scientist on Viking Octantis. I manage a full operation research laboratory and data collection that’s within the cruise ship. We operate and collect data fom pole to pole with partners from around the world, working to collect long term monitoring data from atmospheric profiling to oceanographic data to habitat monitoring to mapping and exploring the seafloor with acoustic sonars and imagery – we do it all!

What keeps you going?

I love exploring and working on a ship doing field work in areas allows me to do just that. Doing research and collecting data in some of the most remote regions in the world inspires me to do the work and share it through publications and science communication. I love introducing people into the world of science, no matter the background or life experience. By teaching about different elements and how all aspects of the world are connected, you can inspire and open people’s eyes to new things.

What’s your message to the world?

Through science, not only can you see the beauty of the world around you, but you can understand it. It’s up to you to go out and find your passion.
