Statement by the International Science Council on research funding transparency
6 November 2025
The International Science Council (ISC) calls for universal transparency in research funding as a key element of responsible scientific practice, and the first line of defence against compromised research integrity, misinformation and disinformation.
The ISC recommends that:
1️⃣ All levels of the global science system adopt the norm of explicitly disclosing all financial and other research support in public communications, publications, and expert activities.
2️⃣ Scientific journals require formal declarations of funding sources for all published research.
3️⃣ The responsibility for disclosure be shared across institutions, universities, academies, unions, and funders, not left to individual researchers alone.
4️⃣ Institutions establish standardized mechanisms to make funding transparency routine.
